Despite being a division below Thistle last season, as they are again this term, Ayr still came up in action against Thistle on three occasions last season. They won a pre-season fixture at Firhill 2-1 and won by the same scoreline in a Challenge Cup quarter-final at Somerset Park. Only in the Scottish Cup did Thistle taste some success winning 2-1 at Firhill with goals from Mark Roberts and Liam Buchanan. Even in that fixture Thistle had to come from a goal behind to win the tie.
