St Johnstone 1, Partick Thistle 1
Saturday 4th April 2009
Thanks to a Gary Harkins goal four minutes from full-time Thistle's promotion
hopes remain alive (Harkins pictured celebrating the goal).
Watched by a travelling support that numbered 1,528 Thistle made an excellent start to the game and were very much the better side in the opening exchanges.
St Johnstone though came more into things as the half progressed and a swerving Martin Hardie free kick caused Jonny Tuffey some anxiety before he was able to clutch hold of the ball.
In the 65th minute St Johnstone edged ahead with a goal that at the time had a decisive look about it. For once Steven Milne had time and space inside the box and he knocked a low shot past Tuffey and into the net.
Thistle pressed hard but with time running out it looked as if the efforts would be in vein. Gary Harkins though had other ideas. His power and close control took him past some challenges inside the St Johnstone box before shooting across Alan Main and into the far corner of the net.
Although there was panic in the St Johnstone ranks there just wasn't enough time for Thistle to fashion a dramatic winner.
Focus in now firmly on Tuesday night's fixture between St Johnstone and Dunfermline at McDiarmid Park.
