Partick Thistle Reserves 5, Stranraer Reserves 2
Tuesday 24th February 2009
There were plenty of goals at Firhill this evening as Thistle reserves defeated their counterparts from Stranraer 5-2 in their penultimate Reserve League Cup West Section tie.
Thistle opened the scoring in the 8th minute when Graeme Eaglesham seized upon a defensive error before confidently slotting the ball past the Stranraer keeper.
The lead was doubled in the 27th minute when Kevin McKinlay shot across goal and found the corner of the net.
Stranraer though halved the deficit just two minutes later when Craig Hinchcliffe misjudged a Frizzell shot.
The lead was back to two, however, in the 31st minute. Good work from Lucas Akins finished with Akins cutback being forced over the line from close range by Scott Tully.
That completed the scoring for the first half but there was more to come after the break.
Thistle made it 4-1 in the 53rd minute when a powerful Ian Maxwell volley from 12 yards flew into the back of the net.
A fifth Thistle goal arrived ten minutes later when Frizzell put through his own net.
There were chances aplenty for Thistle from then until the finish but no sixth goal. Indeed the game's final goal came at the other end with just 2 minutes remaining. Frizzell completing a hat-trick of sorts when he fired past Hinchcliffe scoring his second goal for Stranraer to go with the one he put into his own net.
Team: Hinchcliffe, McGeough, Vezza, Little, Maxwell, Chaplain (Sellars), Tully, MacBeth, Eaglesham, Akins (Hogg), McKinlay (Middlemiss).
Thistle have one more Reserve League Cup West Section tie to play against Clyde where a victory should ensure Thistle's place in the last four of the competition. That tie though is unlikely to be scheduled much before the end of March.
