Partick Thistle Reserves 0, Stenhousemuir Reserves 1

Monday 26th January 2009

The Thistle reserves this evening went down to their second successive defeat in the Reserve League Cup in a match that, if you were being generous, would be described as poor.

With Thistle fielding a relatively strong side with players perhaps with a point to prove the watching management triumvirate of manager Ian McCall, assistant manager Gerry Britton and coach John Henry would have had every right to have expected better.

Thistle did come close to scoring in the second minute when Mark Roberts put Lucas Akins clear but the on loan Hamilton striker dragged his shot from an angle wide of goal.

And that was pretty much it for the first 45 minutes.

There was little better after the break. Thistle's Trialist midfielder who produced an encouraging performance was thwarted twice in the space of a few seconds by the Stenhousemuir keeper and Graeme Eaglesham sent a shot wide of goal.

With five minutes remaining a game that looked set to finish goalless finally produced a goal. Although Craig Hinchcliffe was able to save low down the loose ball fell invitingly into the path of a Stenhousemuir player who from a couple of yards out steered the ball home.

Thistle though should still have grabbed an equaliser with Philip Middlemiss lobbing the ball over the goalkeeper but wide of target.

A disappointing evening was just compounded when Lucas Akins' evening came to an early end in the 63rd minute when he came off with a groin injury.

Team: Hinchcliffe, McGeough, Vezza, Little, M Robertson, Trialist, Ardalany (Eaglesham), McStay, Akins (Middlemiss), Roberts, McKinlay (Tully) subs unused Scully, McDermott.
