Partick Thistle Football Club

 The Manager's Reaction

Saturday 3rd January 2009

It will come as no major surprise to learn that there was an altogether more upbeat feel to the Thistle camp after today's victory than there was in the wake of Tuesday's defeat at Cappielow.

www.ptfc.co.uk took the opportunity to speak to manager Ian McCall, who uncommonly took up a seat in the Broadwood stand for much of the afternoon, shortly after the full-time whistle and he was clearly a happy man.

"I thought that we were absolutely terrific from start to finish. If the mentality hadn't been right we might have struggled to come back from losing a silly goal. That was just a misunderstanding but a daft goal to give away altogether."

"I thought that we started the game really well and bounced back from the loss of that goal and dominated the game and scored some terrific goals. On another day Liam Buchanan, who you can see is such a vital player for us, could have had five goals. He had four one on ones but ended up scoring the hardest chance that he had. It was a great strike and took a bit of the pressure off in the dugout."

In a thrilling game a couple of contentious refereeing decisions proved to be important.

"I was sitting up in the stand where you get a great view and I definitely think that Marc Twaddle got a bit of the ball in the incident where Clyde got their penalty. I feel that it was evened out slightly as I feel that Clyde perhaps should have had another penalty later in the game."

"In general it was a terrific away performance. I said to the players before the game do you want to be looking over your shoulders at the teams below us or do they want St Johnstone visiting Firhill on January 17th just six points above us."

"Our victory today saw us move to third in the league and that shows in this league that you just have to take your defeats and take your medicine and move on and try and put some kind of run together."

"I've been a manager for 11 years now and this is the funniest club that I have ever been at. We seem to go from heroes to villains and back again almost from week to week. Sometimes I think we need to take a step back, look at the overall picture and see just how far we have come in a relatively short space of time. "

Finally Ian had some words of praise for the Thistle fans that provided such excellent vocal backing this afternoon.

"I thought that the supporters today were absolutely outstanding and I said to the players at half-time that they were getting terrific backing. It's not something that I like to say too often because it can come across as a bit sycophantic and starts to lose meaning . Today though the fans were absolutely outstanding and I made sure that the players went over and gave them a clap at the end of the game."
