Five to be Released
Wednesday 6th May 2009
There may still be one game of season 2008-2009 to play but already manager Ian McCall is working hard on putting together a squad of players that can hopefully go one better than this season's second place finish.
A number of players whose contracts are due to expire shortly have already been offered new deals for next season and www.ptfc.co.uk will bring you news of any re-signings just as the deals are completed.
Re-signing players though is only one part of the process of assembling a squad. A much more unpleasant task is letting players know that their services won't be required. That was the unhappy task that Ian McCall was faced with yesterday.
Five players, Scott Chaplain, Simon Donnelly, Graeme Eaglesham, Kevin McKinlay and Michael Robertson, have all been told that there will be no contract for them at Firhill next season.
It was a naturally downbeat McCall that spoke to www.ptfc.co.uk;
"Letting players go, especially those that have done a job for you, is one of the most difficult tasks that a manager faces. In the case of the three senior players on the list had finances been different then ideally I would liked to have kept them while also adding players to the squad. Money is tight right across the board in Scottish football though and that just wasn't possible to do. I have said to Simon Donnelly that if he doesn't get anything fixed up he would be welcome to join us for pre-season training."
"I would like to thank all the players for their efforts in their time at Firhill and wish them all the very best for the future."
