 Jags to receive Award.

Partick Thistle Football Club will be awarded the Lord Provost’s Loving Cup for their contribution to football and the city at a special civic dinner tonight, Friday, 29 May.

 

Glasgow’s First Citizen, Lord Provost Bob Winter (pictured here with the cup, alongside manager Ian McCall, Kris Doolan and Alan Archibald, with his twin sons Jay and Sam) will present the Loving Cup at the Lord Provost’s annual Awards Ceremony in the Banqueting Hall in the City Chambers.

The Loving Cup is the city’s highest honour and is presented to ‘any person or group who have brought distinction and honour to Glasgow’. 

The Lord Provost said: “The Jags have a special place in Glaswegians hearts. It’s my privilege to recognise the affection in which you are held and wish you all the best next season.”

Past recipients include:  Louise Martin (2008); Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum (2007); HMS Glasgow (2004); Willie Haughey (2002); Andy Cameron (1999); HRH The Princess Royal (1998) and Francie and Josie (1990).

 

Councillor Winter will also present the annual Lord Provost’s Awards, which  recognise the achievements of Glaswegians, who have dedicated their professional lives to public service, or distinguished themselves in their respective fields.

 

The Lord Provost said: “I am looking forward to tonight’s event. It is a great occasion and a wonderful way to honour people from diverse walks of life, all of whom have one thing in common - a commitment to Glasgow and its people.

“It is entirely appropriate therefore, that we publicly express our gratitude to these outstanding men and women by celebrating their achievements with a civic dinner.”

The Public Service Award will go to The Very Rev David Lunan, former Moderator of the Church of Scotland and former Presbytery clerk for Glasgow, for his commitment to the religious and social fabric of Glasgow.

The Lord Provost said: “Mr Lunan has a long and distinguished record of service to Glasgow working tirelessly to improve the wellbeing of our citizens.”

Sir Arnold Clark is recognised with the Lord Provost’s Award for Enterprise. His daughter Lucy Fuller will accept the award on his behalf. The Lord Provost said: “Sir Arnold’s remarkable achievements in business are well documented. The City Council is also honoured to have his expertise and commitment to our apprenticeship programme training - providing solid, career opportunities for our young people.”

Sir Arnold Clark said:

Other honours will go to Professor Maggie Kinloch, Vice President and Director of Drama at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music for her outstanding contribution to the performing arts

Dorothy Gunnee for services to music: teaching in primary, secondary and higher education. She also founded a variety of musical organisations including the East Glasgow Concert Band, Glasgow Schools Orchestra and Merchant Voices.

Professor Brian Williams for his distinguished services to Health, in particular his commitment to the care of the elderly and selfless work within the voluntary sector including Age Concern, Help the Aged, the Abbeyfield Society and the Parkinson’s Disease Society.

Professor Pamela Gillies, Principal and Vice Chair of Glasgow Caledonian University, for services to education.

Jim Stevenson, Operations and Enforcement Manager, city Parking (Glasgow) LLP, for services to sport as President of the Scottish Rugby Union.

There is also a posthumous award being collected by nice Fiona Frank, on behalf of the late Hannah Frank (1908 – 2008),  for her special contribution to the visual arts  through the medium of drawings and sculpture.
