Ian McCall on tonight's defeat.
Tuesday 25th August 2009
Football is a sport of contrasting emotions. If one team is on a high then their opponents are invariably plunged into the depths of despair. This evening at Firhill it was Thistle's turn, again, to experience the bitter taste of defeat and in cruel fashion.
If losing to a goal seven minutes from time on Saturday wasn't bad enough the Queen of the South winning goal this evening came with the 90 minutes completed and the game in injury time.
There was an understandably despondent mood in the Firhill camp after the game but Ian McCall still spoke to www.ptfc.co.uk after the game and he was typically forthright with his assessment of the match.
"I've been involved in football for a long time and I don't like to gloss things over. I am, however, reasonably sure that we were the better team this evening. That though means nothing when you don't win the match. I've also been in football long enough and I'm old enough to realise that it's not what you deserve that counts but what you actually get."
"At the moment we simply don't look a goal threat at all. We are not creating anywhere enough chances. This evening we had to rely on a fantastic free kick from Simon Donnelly for our goal. We look like a lovely football side, one that will be good to watch but that isn't good enough. It's one thing to play good football from defence through the middle of the park but we need to do better in the final third."
"The thing is we had a number of good performances from the players tonight and up until they scored their equaliser we were in complete control of the game. At that point we were looking to push on and build upon our lead. Was their winning goal offside? I don't know. I do know that we aren't getting the luck at the moment but to repeat my earlier point it doesn't matter what you deserve but what you end up with. We ended up out the cup tonight and that really hurts."
"It didn't help that Bryan Hodge had to pull out so close to kick-off. The pitch was in excellent condition and I think Bryan would have revelled in those conditions. It was a blow too that Liam Buchanan took a kick to his calf and had to come off. He is, however, fine."
