Airdrie United - Post Match Reaction
Saturday 12th December 2009
Following defeat last Saturday at the hands of present league leaders Dundee manager Ian McCall asked for a positive response from his players today against Airdrie United. He was not to be disappointed. Thistle recovering from the loss of the game's opening goal after just 80 seconds to win 5-2 and score five away against an Airdrie side since a 5-0 success at the old Broomfield back in April 1965.
Naturally the Thistle manager was a contented man when www.ptfc.co.uk caught up with him just after the full-time whistle.
"I actually missed Airdrie United's goal right at the start of the game. Although I thought that our response to that goal was good and that we played well in the immediate aftermath of conceding it we cannot continue to start games in that fashion."
"After we finally scored the equaliser I thought that Airdrie United had a good spell. At that stage the next goal was always going to be really important and we scored it at a good time just on the stroke of half-time."
"There was about a 20-25 minute spell in the second half where I thought some of the football that we played was absolutely scintillating. We scored three goals during that spell and if truth be told we could have scored at least another three or four goals. It wasn't half chances that we were creating either but clear cut opportunities. Chris Erskine, who came on for Mark Corcoran, was an important player for us at that stage in the game. He was absolutely terrific. He is reminiscent of Dennis McQuade as I'm sure anyone who saw Dennis play would agree with. Chris at times shows some fantastic pieces of skill and then runs the ball off the pitch."
"Having said that I felt that we could have scored a few more goals this afternoon I have to acknowledge that so too could Airdrie United, especially when they threw caution to the win in the closing stages of the match."
"We were obviously delighted that we managed to get the victory this afternoon. I don't think that we played poorly by any means against Dundee last week but it was important that we bounced back with a win. After the Dundee game we identified the next four games as four games that are hugely important to us. We started today with the first three point haul from those four games. The aim is then to try and repeat that from each of the next three games."
