 Kilmarnock Post Match Reaction

Wednesday 29th July 2009

It may only have been a friendly and in the great scheme of things it meant very little but it was pleasing all the same to record over first victory over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park for 15 years earlier this evening.

Manager Ian McCall obviously cares little for these little historical asides but he was a satisfied man all the same when www.ptfc.co.uk caught up with as the dust began to settle on what had been a thoroughly entertaining fixture.

"it's very important not to go overboard about results in friendly matches. I didn't go overboard after we lost to Clyde and I'm not getting carried away after tonight's win against Kilmarnock either. That said I though that some of the football that we played tonight was terrific especially middle to front. First half at times I thought we out passed Kilmarnock who are a good side."

"We did have a wee mad ten minute spell at the start of the second half where we gave away a penalty that Jonny saved and conceded two goals. It shouldn't be forgotten though that we did make three changes at the back at the break."

"There were a number of performances that I was very pleased with. I thought Simon Donnelly was outstanding especially when he went up front in the second half. I also thought that Jim Hamilton for the kind of striker that he is made a terrific contribution. Chris Erskine looks to be a real find and I thought Mark Corcoran looked like the kind of player that we have been looking for. He took a wee kick, that's why we took him off but he will be fine."

"We lost over the summer Gary Harkins, who is a real talent, and  Marc Twaddle who I considered to be the best left back in the league. Those players are clearly a loss but I wonder if overall we might be a stronger team right now. As I've said we need to be careful not to read too much into a friendly match but right now I simply don't know what team I will play against Berwick Rangers on Saturday. There are a number of players that are staking claims for a place in the side that can't be ignored for much longer."

One player that won' be featuring against Berwick, or appearing in a Thistle jersey at all, is young Burnley striker Wes Fletcher after the manager dropped his interest in him. The manager explaining a little of the thinking behind that decision.

"I, reluctantly, decided to pull the plug on the Wes Fletcher transfer. That's not a reflection on Burnley Football Club, their manager Owen Coyle and Head of Youth Martin Dobson. They all acted impeccably. It was an outside party that caused this transfer to fall through. The whole affair had been dragging on for ages, we thought the deal was done but things kept being added to the deal. Eventually I decided that enough was enough. I do wish Wes well though and hope that he goes on and has a successful career."

In other Thistle news the Club expect to hear the result of Alan Archibald's MRI scan sometime tomorrow.
