Gordon Lennon Rembered by Sean Graham
Thursday 12th November 2009
I make no apologies for bringing your attention to a match which takes place this
Sunday when a Dumbarton Champions Select will take on a Gordon Lennon Select
Made up of players that Gordon or "Guido" as he was affectionately known had played with during his career.
Gordon has played with clubs such as Harmony Row, Albion Rovers, Stenhousemuir and Partick Thistle as well as Dumbarton and I am sure that the Strathclyde Holmes Stadium will be packed on Sunday as Gordon was a popular young man indeed.
Like many fans in the sporting world, I was shocked to hear of the death of Dumbarton skipper at a time that he was experiencing some of the best times of his life.
He had just captained his club to the Third Division title and had become a proud father when his partner Kelly gave birth to baby Kai.
Gordon was not only a good footballer but he was a decent human being who had time for everyone both on and off the pitch.
Nothing that anyone will say will ever take away the pain of what happened and Gordon's death came as a massive blow to his family, team-mates and workmates at the ACCA and it was his workmates that felt that they had to do something to show how much he meant to them.
Through many hours of hard work by Robert MacLauchlan, Alen Lilley and the staff at the ACCA, the name of their former employee will always live on.
The Gordon Lennon football tournament took place at the Pitz pitches in Townhead, Glasgow and there have also been auctions and raffles to raise funds for the Gordon Lennon Memorial Fund which stands currently at over £9,000.
I am sure that he will be smiling down on Kelly,Kai and all who have lost and loved him and I hope that he gets the tribute that he so deserves and not only from fans of Dumbarton and the clubs that he played for but by many others also.
Go along and pay respects to Gordon.
