Partick Thistle Football Club

 Ian McCall on today's win

Saturday 26th September 2009

The predominate sound on the bus back to Glasgow was not the one of celebration that you  might have expected but rather the sound of coughing and sniffing. To say that there are a few players in the Thistle squad feeling less than a 100% would be perhaps the biggest understatement of the season thus far. Those at the game would have noticed that Paul Cairney, who had an excellent first half, was so unwell that he had to be substituted. As Ian McCall explained to www.ptfc.co.uk when pulse rates were starting to return to a normal he was far from the only one.

"The Thistle fans at the game would have seen Paul Cairney being sick at the side of the pitch and I have to say that he was not the only player to have been suffering in that fashion. Last night we had about five or six players that were unwell and at half-time John Robertson was sick in the dressing room. I don't know how some of these players managed to play a game of football today and I am very proud of them all. It would seem that the Glasgow Warriors suffered from the same virus and that contributed to their defeat last night. It's obvious that this is a virus that has spread itself right through Firhill. The players will be off on Monday as we attempt to try and rid the place of the bug once and for all."

"To win under those circumstances  then was fantastic. We had to withstand some tremendous pressure from Inverness in the last 15 minutes or so. Although there were a few balls that bounced around the penalty box there were few clear cut chances though. Indeed between their penalty and the second goal they created virtually nothing. In contrast we missed a couple of chances to really make sure of the points."

"Just as I was proud of my players today I was also proud of the Thistle supporters. I would like to thank them for making the trip today and providing us with such excellent support. It's something that myself, my coaching staff and the players very much appreciate."
