Having finally seen off the challenge of Annan Athletic in the Co-Operative Insurance Cup on Saturday focus is very much now on the start of the league season this coming weekend with a trip to Stark’s Park to face Raith Rovers. There is time, however, to have one final look back to Saturday’s game. It was Simon Donnelly that scored the winning goal on Saturday but the assist from David Rowson, and not Chris Erskine as first thought by this myopic reporter, played a big part in that goal.
David spoke to www.ptfc.co.uk after the game on Saturday and was delighted that Thistle had managed to overcome a tricky obstacle and reach the next round.
“Any time that you come down to places like Annan it’s going to be tough but fortunately we managed to score a goal before the end that took us through to the next round. It was a stuffy game but from our point of view Bryn Halliwell didn’t have a save to make. Credit for that must go to the defence who were solid and organised throughout the game. ”
As tight as the winning margin it was still a thoroughly merited Thistle victory.
“That’s right and you shouldn’t forget that it is still very early in the season and there is still a bit of sharpness to come before the start of the league season. I think building up that sharpness is one of the things that we have to take from the Annan game.”
The blustery conditions didn’t help the game a spectacle but David didn’t seem to have been too bothered by the wind.
“I think we played better in the second half when it was a little easier to bring the ball down and play some passes but I didn’t think that the wind was too much of a problem.”
An early goal would have helped settle things down and David, not a prolific scorer from midfield for Thistle, came close to scoring that goal after just 5 minutes.
“It was just basically s snap shot and unfortunately their keeper has managed to make a save. We had a few other chances and ultimately I think we did enough to get through to the next round.”
As the game wore on did David start to worry that goal wasn’t going to come?
“Not really, I think we were pretty much on top in the second half and I thought that it was just a matter of time before something did happen.”
