 Raith Rovers - After Match Reaction

Saturday 7th August 2010

Losing is painful enough at the best of times but to lose the opening league game of the season and in the fashion we did this afternoon just makes the pain that bit more acute.

Quiet doesn’t do justice in describing the Thistle team bus as it headed back to Glasgow this evening. The air of despondency hanging low over everyone.

Having taken a bit of time to gather his thoughts though manager Ian McCall spoke to www.ptfc.co.uk about a nightmare start to the league season.

“That was an absolutely gutting result and I think you need only look at the players to see how gutted they all are.”

Said the Thistle manager before continuing;

“The goals that we lost in the first half we totally avoidable and this after I felt that we had started the game well and were starting to get into things. It’s been individual errors that have been our undoing this afternoon and the players have held their hands up to those errors. Bryn Halliwell was quick to do so and while people will look at the third goal and see Willie Kinniburgh as the man at fault, John Robertson has held his hands up for that one as he was dragged out of position.”

“The game was really over by half-time but I was pleased with the way that the ten men fought in the second half. Some of the players simply ran themselves into the ground. I think the fans saw that and they did their best to try and give the players a lift. If I was to find one thing that I was pleased about today it was the fact that the players simply didn’t give in during the second half. As I’ve said the game was basically over by half-time but we still created three or four really good chances and I don’t think that is entirely down to Raith Rovers taking the foot off the gas.”

“What today may have taught us is that we might need to adopt a system that first and foremost makes us difficult to beat. If that is what we need to do then I’ll not hide away from doing that. That’s my job after all.”
