Seven days on from the first run out at home of the 26/27 campaign, Partick Thistle Women were back on the road, making the journey over to the Balmoral Stadium to face Nathan Flight’s Aberdeen.
The Dons’ hadn’t had it easy in their first few outings this season, shipping 9 goals to Hearts and Glasgow City with none in their favour, seeing them enter the tie rock bottom of the standings. Still early days, the new faces both in the dugout and pitch alike were looking to capitalise on the home advantage to get their season up and running, a very positive looking Partick Thistle standing between that.
The scorelines hadn’t proved entirely reflective of the story of the season so far for Gary Holt’s Jags. A well earned opening day point paired with a strong showing against former league champions had built impressive foundations, begging the point of it being a case of when those well warranted three points would finally come into their possession.
It was a bright start for Thistle, who were quickly establishing a method to their play, the series of short passes helping them to break through the lines as they pushed into the attacking third. Their efforts saw them host the more threatening of the goal opportunities through the opening ten minutes, the ball forced into the box landing just a bit too awkwardly for summer signing Robinson to get a good connection, seeing it bobble just high of goal and over the bar.
It wasn’t just one way traffic though, with kudos to go to the other end of the park as the hosts bolted on the break, the long range effort handled well by Easdon to get thistle back to attacking.
The wave of Thistle attacks kept coming, as Slater’s looping shot from range dipped towards goal before being tipped away by the keeper preceding a series of corners, eventually cleared away by the home defence.
It was only a matter of time before their efforts were duly rewarded as the corner from Bulloch was punched away, only going as far as Robinson however, she fired the shot with force well beyond the surrounding jerseys and keeper alike to mark her first Partick thistle goal 24 minutes in.
It stayed much the same through the half hour mark, as thistle kept knocking at the door to put the game that bit further out of sight. Strong across the park, they mitigated through any Abderdeen advance, preventing the Dons from any chances that challenged Easdon in goal. Straight back on the attack, the ball swung in from the left landed at Donaldson to flick the header towards goal, the ball falling just wide of the post to deny the 2nd.
3 minutes from the conclusion of the first half would double the Jags deficit in spectacular fashion. The initial corner was dealt with by the hosting defence before the ball soon thereafter found Townsley on the far side. Having worked past her marker, she cut in before unleashing a firing shot from range that curled high into the top corner to give a bit of breathing room through to the half time whistle.
The second half stayed much the same as the first. Thistle looked comfortable in possession and continued to break through the lines as they worked past the Dons defence. The shots at goal kept coming, in this instance the well worked team move from the back saw Robinson get the ball to Donaldson in the box, her effort forced away at the last minute from close range to deny the third of the afternoon.
Still looking to extend, it took to just beyond the hour mark for Thistle to put the game out of sight. Following another wave of pressure, the corner was swung high into a crowded box by Bulloch. Reacting quickest of those around her, Longcake was on hand to stab home from point blank range, bolstering into the back of the net for the 3-0 scoreline with 25 minutes remaining.
From the goal is where Gary Holt looked to his bench for the first time that afternoon, opting to introduce Jo Love for Amy Bulloch.
Thistle didn’t look content with three however, as they started making use of the long switch balls to catch the defence off guard, the resulting shot from such going high of the bar as they continued their hunt.
Going back to the bench, Donaldson and Robinson were next to depart for McKenna and Kiera Syrjanen.
Through the final ten minutes it remained more or less all Thistle, who had settled into a rhythm of keeping possession, working the ball from side to side across the park, giving the opposition no real opportunity to get involved as they set to see the tie out without mistake.
The final substitutions saw Teagen Syrjanen and Shona Cowan replace Imogen Longcake and Rosie Slater, marking a poignant moment as both Syrjanen sisters shared the park for the first time in the SWPL.
The rest of the tie went without a hitch as Partick Thistle gained their first 3 points of the SWPL1 26/27 in professional fashion. Dominant from start to end, their cohesive effort really denied any kind of opportunity for the hosts and gave a lot for the Jags to be excited about as the campaign continues to unfold.
Their next tie is back on home soil as they welcome Celtic to Petershill on September 6th, kick off 1pm.
