Partick Thistle Women’s FC were at Petershill Park where they came up against Hibernian who made their way from the capital for today’s clash in the Scottish Women’s Premier League. The Jags went into the game following a 1-1 draw against Spartan’s in the opening game of the season with Gary Holt making just one change to the team that played the opener with Rachel Donaldson coming in for CaCee McKenna.
The game started lively, with both teams applying pressure to each other’s goals, however there was no clear-cut chances on goal in the opening 15 minutes. The first shot near goal came from Townsley stealing the ball in a dangerous area and sliding it over to Longcake who hit her shot into the side netting. Minutes later, up the other end, Hibs had a chance of their own when Boyle took the ball a short run but couldn’t deliver the end product. After the opening 30, it began to calm down as both teams struggled to keep a hold of the ball and create any buildup play.
The Jags began to pile on the pressure as the half wore on, they were keeping the game very much in the Hibs and very much on the front foot until the away side were awarded a corner up the other end of the pitch. Hunter managed to get her head on the ball that was swung in by Notley and made it 1-0 against the run of play. Moments later, there was an opportunity for Thistle to equalise after a scramble in the box from a corner, but no one could get a shot on it and Anastasiadis collected it.
This did however get back on level terms, after a good run from Townsley down the left, McGoldrick gathered the ball in midfield and from 25 yards out she sent it gliding into the goal. It went right over Anastasiasis and straight into the top right corner for a well-deserved equaliser.
The sensational goal was not enough for The Jags to go in at half time level, a scramble in the box saw the ball find it’s way into the net for the visitors after a deflection. It was the last action of the first half and Thistle would be disappointed to be behind at the break.
The second half started lively, Thistle were in search of an equaliser and Hibs were looking to extend their lead. The first chance of the half came from a Hibs corner, yet another scramble in the box saw the attacker’s shot go wide. Minutes later, the visitors had another chance when Burchill had her shot on target saved comfortably by Easdon.
Hibs began to dominate possession but were unable to make anything of it, and Thistle’s defending was solid, making it even more difficult for Hibs to capitalise on chances. Despite The Jags’ best efforts at keeping the ball out of their net, they were unable to stop Hunter from heading in her second of the game at the back post after a short bit of build-up play after a free kick.
Thistle were almost back in the game after Bulloch crossed the ball into a dangerous area but no one was able to get on the end of it. Hibs also had chances of their own, as Thistle pushed to try get back into the game. Easdon saved a shot from Smith that looked like it was going in and moments later, the visitors hit the post from a shot in the middle of the box that came from Fitzgerald.
Thistle continued to push for the goal that would set up an exciting ending. The Jags finally got a chance from another corner, the ball was whipped into a dangerous area and despite two shots towards the goal, Anastasiasis managed to collect the ball and clear it as time ran out for The Jags.
It was a promising performance for Thistle with a trip to Balmoral Stadium to face Aberdeen next up.
